In a significant operation against cybercrime, the Burkina Faso Central Brigade for Combating Cybercrime (BCLCC) has successfully put an end to the activities of a group of two (02) suspected cyber delinquents. Specializing in identity theft followed by online fraud, K. R and I. E, both students, posed as mobile phone sellers on social media platforms, particularly on Facebook, using the accounts “L NABA DAISHI” and “OUEDRAGO Mahamado.”
Modus Operandi: Identity Theft and Deceptive Phone Sales
Each member of the group posted images of mobile phones downloaded from the internet through the aforementioned accounts, offering them at very attractive prices to lure potential victims.
When an interested customer contacted a group member and agreed on the price, they demanded payment in advance or the full purchase amount via mobile payment solutions. Subsequently, the customer received a promise of receiving the phone through transportation companies. Once K. R and I.E received the payment, they cut off all contact with the victim.
Legal Actions and Acknowledgments
Following their arrest and subsequent interrogation at the BCLCC headquarters, all parties admitted to the charges. The suspected cyber delinquents have been brought before the Prosecutor of Faso at the Ouaga I High Court to answer for their crimes.
The BCLCC expresses gratitude to the entire population and the Central Police Station in the city of Manga, whose contributions were instrumental in achieving this result. Additionally, it advises users to remain vigilant when making online purchases.
