Oman recently took a significant step forward in its cybersecurity journey with the inauguration of the Hadatha Centre. Established by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) in partnership with the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), the Hadatha Centre aims to advance Oman’s cybersecurity industry through research, development, and innovation. This initiative highlights Oman’s commitment to building a robust cybersecurity ecosystem that empowers youth, supports economic development, and strengthens national security.

Cybersecurity in Oman: Building Capacity and Innovation
With the official opening of the Hadatha Centre, Oman now has a dedicated facility focused on fostering a culture of cybersecurity innovation and entrepreneurship. The Centre, inaugurated on October 26, 2024, under the patronage of Halima bint Rashid al Zaria, Chairperson of the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, represents a vital part of Oman’s National Cybersecurity Industry Programme. The Centre will serve as a hub for knowledge management, research, and design of cybersecurity products through simulation, modelling, and testing, with the goal of building a skilled workforce that can meet the increasing demands of a digital world.

H.E. Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology at MTCIT, emphasized that Hadatha Centre’s mission is to create a cohesive link between government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and academia. By facilitating collaborative projects and promoting cutting-edge research, the Centre aims to establish Oman as a regional leader in cybersecurity innovation.

Key Objectives of the Hadatha Centre
The Hadatha Centre has set ambitious goals, aligning with Oman’s vision of becoming a leader in cybersecurity in the Arab region. Among its primary objectives:

  1. Research and Development in Cybersecurity: Hadatha will serve as an R&D hub, enabling professionals and students to develop next-generation cybersecurity solutions through advanced modelling and simulation.
  2. Educational Outreach and Capacity Building: By collaborating with universities, the Centre aims to provide students and young professionals with access to cybersecurity education, resources, and innovation programs.
  3. Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship: One of the Centre’s core missions is to nurture a culture of innovation, encouraging young Omanis to create new cybersecurity technologies and startups that can compete regionally and globally.
  4. Promoting Cybersecurity as an Economic Driver: The Centre seeks to attract investment in Oman’s cybersecurity sector, contributing to economic growth and social development.
  5. Supporting National Security: Hadatha will play a key role in strengthening Oman’s cybersecurity infrastructure to protect critical systems, data, and services against cyber threats.

The Role of Hadatha in Oman’s Cybersecurity Ecosystem
The Hadatha Centre not only fills a critical gap in Oman’s cybersecurity framework but also positions Oman to address the global rise in cyber threats. By connecting academia, industry, and government, the Centre ensures a unified approach to addressing cybersecurity challenges.

Its focus on fostering local talent and supporting technical development will be essential for building a resilient digital economy. In addition, by providing resources for simulation and testing, the Centre allows Omani companies to develop, validate, and commercialize cybersecurity solutions that could be adopted globally.

10 Strategic Tips for Strengthening Cybersecurity in Oman

  1. Promote Cybersecurity Education: Integrate cybersecurity courses into university programs and offer specialized certifications to build a skilled workforce.
  2. Encourage Public-Private Partnerships: Strengthen collaboration between government agencies and private companies to address cybersecurity challenges and innovate solutions.
  3. Support Local Cybersecurity Startups: Provide funding, mentorship, and resources for local entrepreneurs to create cybersecurity startups and products that meet regional and global needs.
  4. Increase Awareness Among Youth: Launch awareness campaigns and workshops targeting young Omanis to instill cybersecurity awareness from an early age.
  5. Invest in Advanced Technologies: Equip the Centre with state-of-the-art technologies for cybersecurity research, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, to stay ahead of emerging threats.
  6. Expand Cybersecurity Internships and Training: Develop internship programs with local companies and government entities, allowing students and graduates to gain hands-on experience.
  7. Develop Incident Response Frameworks: Create national incident response frameworks that ensure quick detection and mitigation of cybersecurity incidents, minimizing impact.
  8. Attract Foreign Investment: Actively seek investments from global cybersecurity firms to boost the local cybersecurity industry and bring international expertise to Oman.
  9. Focus on Compliance and Standards: Encourage businesses to adopt international cybersecurity standards, ensuring Oman remains aligned with global best practices.
  10. Build a Resilient Supply Chain: Ensure that Oman’s supply chain partners and vendors also adhere to robust cybersecurity practices to protect against vulnerabilities.

Conclusion:
The Hadatha Centre represents a major milestone for Oman in its quest to become a leader in cybersecurity within the Arab region. By investing in local talent, innovation, and collaborative development, Oman is building the foundations of a secure, resilient digital ecosystem that will support both national security and economic growth.

As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, initiatives like the Hadatha Centre are essential to preparing for future challenges. Oman’s vision for a robust cybersecurity industry is not only strengthening its own national infrastructure but also setting a benchmark for others in the region. With a unified approach and commitment to innovation, Oman is well on its way to establishing itself as a regional powerhouse in cybersecurity. Source: Zawya Image Credit: Oman Observer
