The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a stern warning: a critical vulnerability affecting Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM) and MobileIron Core software is being actively exploited by malicious actors.

This isn’t just theoretical – your mobile devices and sensitive data could be at risk if you’re not careful.

What’s the Problem?

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-35082, allows attackers to bypass authentication and gain unauthorized remote access to devices running EPMM or MobileIron Core versions 11.10, 11.9, 11.8, and MobileIron Core 11.7 and below. This means a hacker could potentially:

  • Steal your personal information, including phone numbers, emails, and contacts.
  • Access your corporate data stored on your device.
  • Install malware or other malicious software.
  • Spy on your activities and communications.

Real-World Example:

Imagine this: you’re attending a conference and using your work phone to access company emails and documents. Your phone runs EPMM software with the unpatched vulnerability. Unbeknownst to you, a hacker lurking in the network exploits the vulnerability and gains access to your device. They steal your work emails, contacts, and confidential documents, putting your company’s data at risk.

Protect Yourself: 10 Steps to Secure Your Devices

  • Patch Immediately: The most critical step is to patch your EPMM or MobileIron Core software to the latest version immediately. Ivanti has released patches for all affected versions. Contact your IT administrator if you need help with patching.
  • Update Regularly: Make sure you keep your operating system and other software applications up-to-date to patch vulnerabilities as soon as they’re discovered.
  • Strong Passwords: Use strong and unique passwords for your EPMM or MobileIron Core accounts and other online platforms. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Beware of Phishing: Don’t click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown senders. Phishing attacks can be used to trick you into downloading malware that exploits the vulnerability.
  • Disable Unnecessary Features: Disable features in EPMM or MobileIron Core that you don’t use, such as remote wipe, as they can be exploited by attackers.
  • Use a VPN: When using public Wi-Fi, connect through a reliable VPN to encrypt your traffic and protect your data from eavesdropping.
  • Antivirus and Anti-Malware: Use reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your devices and keep them updated.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice any suspicious activity on your device, such as unauthorized app installations or unusual data usage, report it immediately to your IT administrator.
  • Spread Awareness: Share this information with your colleagues and friends who use EPMM or MobileIron Core software to help them stay safe.
  • Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on cybersecurity news and best practices to protect your devices from future threats.

Don’t Wait, Patch Now!

The CVE-2023-35082 vulnerability is a serious threat that is actively being exploited by hackers. By taking the steps outlined above, you can significantly reduce your risk and protect your devices and data from harm. Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can create a safer digital world for everyone.

This vulnerability highlights the importance of staying vigilant about cybersecurity threats and taking proactive steps to protect your devices. By following these tips and remaining informed, you can help ensure that your mobile devices remain a safe and secure space for your personal and professional life.
